When on Google Earth 28

Welcome, WOGErs, to my lonely, neglected history blog. Thanks to Andrea, the winner of WOGE 26, for presenting me with low-hanging fruit. Below: Something a bit more obscure. First, though, the boilerplate:

Q: What is When on Google Earth?
A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!

Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.

Q: Who wins?
A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.

Q: What does the winner get?
A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!

Two very general hints, for starters:

1. This site is pre-modern.
2. This site is open and easily accessible to the public.

Is it Quin Abbey, co Clare Ireland was built between 1402 and 1433

Nearly Geoff - It's actually Rosserilly Friary - a medieval Franciscan Friary(founded 1351 according to the Four Masters) and two of Moore Groups archaeologists trip over it every morning on the way to work. Local legend has it that the bell from the bell tower was thrown into the adjacent Black River during the Cromwellian period, and every time there's a vocation in the Parish, the bell can be heard to toll - but given Ireland's recently re-discovered atheism, its a long time since that's happened.

My cottage is 1ml away in Cordarragh! Two years ago one of our staff held a remembrance ceremony for his Father in the refectory! So we are very familiar with the site....

Billy's got it--well done! I didn't count on a local playing the game and was looking forward to seeing a roster of Irish and English monasteries parade through the comments. :)

I didn't have a guess. I just checked out the comments to see if there were actually people out there capable of identifying this. Color me impressed. :)
